Hosting 2010 World Cup![]() Bloemfontein Airport Bloemfontein was honoured to be one of the six host cities for hosting the FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa. For this purposes, infrastructure in the city was extensively upgraded and especially access streets near and around the Free State Stadium broadened, upgraded and beautified. The Free State Stadium itself was upgraded at a cost of R245 million with its seating capacity increased to 40 000. The Bloemfontein Airport was also extensively upgraded and received international status. Altogether 6 FIFA games were played in Bloemfontein and the atmosphere in the city with a throng of foreign visitors and tourist mingling with local residents, was simply riveting – the experience of a lifetime! The legacy of hosting FIFA 2010 remains with Bloemfontein in a huge way, especially with the upgrading of infrastructure fast-tracked to an extent otherwise not to have been achieved. |
