Profile of the district
The Northern Free State region or Fezile Dabi District is characterised firstly by its strategic agricultural contribution to the Free State's share of being labelled as the bread basket of South Africa. The districts contribution comes mainly in grain like maize, wheat, sorghum, sunflower, etc., and stock farming including cattle, sheep, game, etc. Today these commodities also have a spin-off in the form of a variety of agro-processing industries in the region.
The district is of course also home to the Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site – one of the tourism icons of the Free State as well as of South Africa.
The 300 km˛ Vaal Dam between the Free State and Gauteng is not only the main source of water to South Africa's industrial heartland, it also is the inland water mecca of South Africa, offering boundless opportunities for water sports.
The present towns in the district are (in alphabetical order) Deneysville, Edenville Frankfort, Heilbron, Koppies, Kroonstad, Oranjeville, Parys, Sasolburg, Tweeling, Viljoenskroon, Villiers and Vredefort.
Of these, Sasolburg, accommodating part of the Sasol Group of Companies, is the foremost industrial area by far in the Free State. Parys on the banks of the Vaal River is at present a booming tourist town, while Kroonstad is one of the bigger towns and economic growth points in the province.
Proximity of the Fezile Dabi District to Gauteng allows one to reach this area within one hour's drive from leaving OR Tambo International Airport. Excellent accommodation facilities and game farms and camping sites for the adventure junkies cater for a wide range of accommodation needs.
